Amelia Island

From: "Matt"  Subject: Re: FL-East Coast Camping ; Lynn.  Here are a couple of spots on the beach that you may like.  On Amelia Island is Fort Clinch.  A nice state park close to the hub bub of Fernandina beach and some neat shopping, beachs etc. They have 2 campgrounds. one on the beach and one in the woods. The beach site is small but nice and if you pay attention you will see the Nuke subs go in and out of Kingsbay behind the dunes. You can tour the fort or just do nothing.

The second one is always my first choice. I hesitate to tell you about it, but we have our reservations set for this year so I won't mind the competition. Halfway between
St Augustine and Daytona, about 20 mile each way, is Beverly beach camptown.  I will let you research it on the web. Won't tell you more. like to keep some places secret. but it is great. Not cheap, but when the ocean is breaking 20 feet from the rig It stirs my soul.
Good luck and have fun.

Arcadia:

Has anyone ever been to this camp ground in Arcadia FL?

Peace River is a fantastic campground! The owners live onsite and are always in and around the campground. During holiday weekends there is always something to do. When I lived in Florida, we would have family reunions there every Thanksgiving always had a good time.

Bushnell:

Any recommendations or otherwise on RV parks near Lake Panasoffkee?  Blueberry Hill in Bushnell, FL is very nice. Next door to a WalMart and not that far from Lake Panasoffkee. I live in same county abt 20 miles north of Bushnell. Don't know the rating of Blueberry Hill, but we have camped there two or three times. Nice asphalt pads, good interior roads, great pool, other rec activities, rest rooms very clean and nicely arranged, good main hall, about 1/4 mile off of I-75, but didn't notice any noise (tree and WalMart are between it and I-75).

Daytona area; Tomoka State Park; Ormond Beach, FL

Located at confluence of the Tomoka and Halifax Rivers.  Hookups for RV’s but a limit of 34’ long and 11’ tall.  RV area has 30 & 50 amp service and water.  Dump station in park.  3 bath houses..  great pictures in 12-2005 Camping Life.

Henderson Beach State Park

We spent 8 nights using 3 sites  in January 2006. As far as a campground I would rate it a 10+.  As a campground/RV Park I give it a 9.  Please see the pictures.  In 26 years of camping, I think this park qualifies as the best campground we have been at and better than any RV Park we have ever used.  It sure beats out the one RV resort we have used.  Our 40’ back in site was actually 54’ deep and each site has a separate area for the fire ring and picnic table which is about 14’x14’.  Privacy is great.  The vegetation is so dense you can not walk between any site and its neighbor. Roads are good asphalt and pads are level gravel which is raked after each camper moves out.  I measured one pull through site which was just over 100’ long.  Use caution if reserving a site in the older “A” loop as the sites are not as large.  Also, the pt’s on the outside of the loops are curved.  Those on the inside are straight, but the vegetation makes them very private.  Many of the sites have picnic tables which can not be seen from the road.  Each site has a clothesline.  The boardwalk to the beach has been redone and is back open as of 1/15/2006. The beach front area is huge.  All sites appear to have 30 and 50 amp hookups plus two water faucets.  There are at least 5 campground hosts, plus the park staff and the ranger. Tile restrooms are cleaned daily from 9-10 AM.  Due to the amount of bleach they use, I recommend showers before 9 or late in the afternoon.  For those who visit in the “off season”, The Crab Shack, east on old 98, has a winter special lunch and dinner menu with a large selection of meals from $6.99 to $9.99.  They will hand you the “full price” menu, but each table should have one small copy of the winter special menu.  Ask if you don’t see it or call ahead to see what is considered the winter season.

POSSIBLE NEGATIVES:  No cable tv and almost nothing can be picked up with an antenna. No sewer connections.  (This may be a blessing as it will cause campers to not try to stay for months.) No internet connections.  The host said new phones with modem connections were installed at each bathhouse last year, but they have never worked.  Several places nearby have free wifi. (Panera Bread east on HY 98 and The Bad Ass Coffee Shop east on old Hy 98.     And, they still haven’t put a light near the gate so you can see the combination lock. Always carry a flashlight if you will be returning after they gate is locked, which can be as early as 5PM. I would also suggest that you try unlocking it during the day while the gate and the office is open, just to be sure you can figure out how it works.  If you have a problem, the office staff can show you how it works.

Topsail State Park

Subject: Headed to Topsail State Park, Fla. & ?

Hello all! We are about to take off for vacation at
Topsail State Park near Destin, Florida. We have heard great things about this park as it used to be a privately owned park with all the amenities but the State of Florida recently bought it. Luckily, they kept all the amenities like tram to the beach, pool, store, etc.  I've heard it is
beautiful and has concrete pads and landscaping around every site sort of like
Fort Wilderness at Disney.
Supposedly, this campground gets all highest ratings
10/10/10.  I have a question for anyone who has stayed at Topsail:
Can you walk/ride bikes to the beach or do you pretty much have to take the tram? Is there parking at the beach if you want to drive your own car? I'm trying to plan out how I am going to get all our "stuff" down to the beach for the kids, etc.

TOPSAIL STATE PARK. You will love it. The sites are not right on the water, but there is a very nice shuttle to take you to the PRIVATE beach--or you can ride bikes. You absolutely cannot go wrong with this state park. Henderson State Park is closer to the hussle and bussle of Destin, but I've heard there is alot of noise. Topsail is nicely nestled away and there are no hotels or condos for miles. We are very familiar with the area and spend at least 2 weeks a year
(1 in camper and 1 in family beachhouse) in Destin. I'd be glad to help if you have any questions.
Have fun, Karen Gill

Disney World;  Fort Wilderness

We have stayed at Fort Wilderness the last 4 times we have visited Disney World. It is a great place to camp if you are visiting the Disney parks. The sites are large ,semi secluded and have paved pads. The price is a little on the high side but the last time we went we got discounts by buying park tickets at the same time. They had a new option last summer we could bring our dog with us but we had to stay in a loop that was dogs only It was fine and we had a large area to
walk him. My kids love it there especially with the bus system they can get anywhere in the Disney complex very easily. If you need any specific info just post another question    Doug

Ft. Lauderdale:

Big Cypress Seminole Reservation  This weekend we got to take out the new TT - we are newbies so we were hoping all would go smoothly. We had a great time. No problems with us towing, or setting up or anything else (dumping.....) The weekend was great. We went to the Big Cypress Seminole Reservation which is just West of Ft. Lauderdale. Everything works fine, no complaints and no reason for it to go back to the dealer. We are so happy with our purchase. Our TV did a fine job also - even with the strong winds that are surrounding the fire in the Everglades.

James Island County Park

We went to Folly Beach and swung into James Island County Park and took a look-see for ourselves.  We were sick that we didn't stay there!  We really liked the fact that they have an off-leash area for the dogs to run and swim right on the lake.  We try to get to Charleston a couple times of year to see my best friend, so from now on - it's James Island for sure!  Maybe we can give you a holler next time we get up that way. Lake Placid is so quaint, but a little off the beaten path in case you're looking for excitement.  Have you been there before?
Happy Camping!!

We have stayed in so many wonderful campgrounds in our 4 years of camping in our Trail-Lite.  We prefer the public campgrounds (National & State Parks) over private ones (though there are many good private ones).  Well if I had to choose one, I would pick
Salt Springs Campground in Ocala National Forest (North Central Florida).  Swimming in the springs, 72 degrees, was great.  We were always surrounded by schools of mullet and other variety of fish that thrive
in brackish water.  We saw beautiful purple catfish with white spots clinging to the sides of underwater caves. There were inspiring hiking trails leading to sinkholes and hidden lakes.  One trail takes you through a old settlement that inspired Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings to pen "The Yearling".  The campground was an open area surrounded by many Oak trees, large sites with clean & well maintained bathhouses.
Truly a gem !

St. Andrews State Park

St. Andrews (P.C. beach, florida) site reccomendation

Hello everyone. We just returned from a stay at
St. Andrews State Park located at Panama City Beach, Florida. We stayed in site #4...it was wonderful and I just wanted to share. It is a huge site, totally shaded and even has its own little beach area on the water complete with jetty rocks topped with pelicans.  We could barely see our neighbors. Our kids loved it and so did we. My husband could wade out right in back of our camper to fish.  Interesting to note we did not have reservations but it less than 1/2 full so we had our pick of sites. This is quite unusual because normally you have to make reservations WELL in advance to get a spot there much less one on the water. Take care, Karen Gill
